I noticed my iPad 2 16GB Wi-Fi had no sound, but all the sound settings and lock switch are set correctly. Then I opened the iPod app, it showed "Dock Connector" in the top-left where the volume control normally is. But my iPad was not plugged into a dock.
So I plugged it into my car dock. It plays music/sounds. When I unplug it, I get volume control back. However, if I sync it or plug it into the charger, I get the issues again. Doing a full restore can't fix it.
Today I take the iPad to Apple store. Apple has confirmed it is indeed a hardware issue and I get a new one.

I have the problem with an iPad 1 and iOS 4.3.5. Don't believe this is a hardware issue. It's either iOS 4.3.5 software or a firmware issue which Apple won't acknowledge. (iMac, Mac Mini, Macbook Air, iPad 1 and 2 iPad 2s). My iPad2s work fine but but my iPad1 keeps flipping to iPad Dock Connector.
