iPad backup session failed

I try to restore my iPad after the update to OS 4.2 on a Windows 7 computer. Then I get the following error:

iTunes could not restore the iPad because the backup session failed.

I have tried older backups and none of them work. After I change the time zone settings to any different time setting, I am able to backup witn no problems. The fix is so stupid.

  1. Had the same problem. Question: Have you rebooted before trying your restore? Apparently, you have to have enough free memory available for the iPad to back up or restore. If you don't it'll fail. Try rebooting your iPad, and by that I mean hold down both the Home AND the on/off button. Don't slide the slider. Just let it shut down. You might also want to move any previous backup folders to your desktop temporarily until you're done, just in case any of them are corrupted. Whatever you do, DON'T start up any iPad apps until you're finished. Plug in the iPad, open iTunes and do a backup. It may take awhile but let it finish.

Assuming it backs up successfully, shut down iTunes, disconnect the iPad and put those backup files on your desktop back where they belong. Then restart iTunes, plug in the iPad and select the original backup file you wanted from the menu. If it's not corrupt, it should work this time.

  2. There are great solutions here. The one about moving your backup folders to your desktop worked for me on my iPad.

    Thanks!
