How to sort contacts by first name on iPad

In order to find people quicker, you can sort the contacts stored on your iPad.

Sort contacts by first name
Tap Setting > Mail > Contacts, Calendars
Under "contacts" choose sort order, then tap "First, Last".

To display a last name first, just tap "Last, First".
